Cambridge English and IELTS are the two most widely recognised English language certificates in the world. Both are credible. Both are accepted by universities and employers globally. The question is not which one is better in general, it is which one fits your specific situation.
The key difference in how they work
IELTS produces a score on a 1 to 9 band scale. Different institutions set different minimum band requirements. A score of 6.5 or 7.0 is required for most UK university programmes. Immigration authorities specify minimum band scores for different visa categories.
Cambridge English exams are tied to specific CEFR levels. B2 First certifies B2. C1 Advanced certifies C1. C2 Proficiency certifies C2. There is no partial score, you pass or fail each level. Cambridge certificates do not expire. IELTS results expire after two years.

When to choose IELTS
IELTS Academic is specifically required for the UK Student visa and for university applications in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada where a specific band score is listed as a requirement. If an institution or authority specifies IELTS by name, Cambridge will not substitute.
IELTS results arrive faster, 13 days versus three to six weeks for Cambridge. If you have a deadline, IELTS gives you more time to retake if needed.
When to choose Cambridge
Cambridge certificates do not expire, which makes them more useful for long-term career documentation. A C1 Advanced certificate obtained in 2020 is still valid in 2030. An IELTS result from 2020 is not.
Cambridge is more widely used in Southern and Eastern Europe. Italy, Spain, Poland, Greece, where employers and universities are more familiar with the CEFR-level framing. For working in those markets, a C1 Advanced certificate is often more immediately recognisable than an IELTS band score.
Cambridge writing and use of English sections are more demanding than IELTS equivalent sections. A C1 Advanced certificate signals a higher standard of written accuracy than an IELTS 7.0, which is why some academic institutions and law firms in the UK prefer Cambridge for roles requiring precise written English.
