A free English proficiency test measures your English level against the CEFR scale and tells you whether you are A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2. The test covers grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. You get your result immediately. This guide explains how these tests work, what the results mean, and what to do with them.
What an English proficiency test measures
Most free online English tests are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the international standard published by the Council of Europe in 2001. The six levels run from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery).
A 25-question CEFR test covers three areas. Grammar questions test your knowledge of verb forms, sentence structure, and common patterns. Vocabulary questions test word meaning, collocations, and register. Reading comprehension questions test your ability to extract meaning from a short text.
What the test does not measure: speaking ability, writing quality, listening comprehension, or pronunciation. An online proficiency test gives you a partial picture of your English level, focused on receptive and structural skills.
How CEFR levels work
The six CEFR levels divide into three pairs. A1 and A2 are basic users, you can handle simple, familiar situations. B1 and B2 are independent users, you can manage most everyday and professional situations. C1 and C2 are proficient users, you use the language with high accuracy and flexibility.
For work purposes, the relevant levels are B1 through C1. B2 is what most employers mean by "professional proficiency." C1 is what they mean by "fluent." B1 is sufficient for roles with limited language exposure.
What the test looks like
The Examinizer English test has 25 multiple-choice questions. Each question has four answer options. The questions are drawn from a bank and cover all levels from A1 to C2, so you will encounter some questions that feel easy and some that feel very difficult. This is normal, the difficulty range is how the test determines your exact level.
You have no time limit per question, but the test is designed for 25 minutes. Most people complete it in 20 to 30 minutes.
How to read your result
After the last question, you see your CEFR level, your raw score (for example, 19 out of 25), and an accuracy percentage. The CEFR level is the most useful figure for practical purposes, it is the number employers and universities recognise.
A score of 19 out of 25 does not automatically mean B2. The level is calculated based on which questions you answered correctly, not just the total number. A person who answers all A1-B1 questions correctly but misses C1 questions will score differently than someone who skips easy questions but gets hard ones right.
General English vs Business English
Examinizer offers two English tests. The General English test covers everyday language across all topics. The Business English test focuses on workplace vocabulary, professional communication, and business contexts.
If you are testing your English for a job application in a corporate environment, Business English is the more relevant test. For academic admission, immigration, or general purposes, General English covers the full CEFR range more broadly.
Getting a certificate
Taking the test is free. If you need a certificate to show an employer, university, or immigration authority, you can purchase an official PDF certificate for $8 after completing the test.
The certificate includes your name, the test name, your CEFR level, your score, the date, and a unique 12-character verification code. Anyone can verify the certificate at examinizer.net/verify/ in about 10 seconds by entering the code. The certificate does not expire.
How this compares to IELTS and TOEFL
| Feature | Examinizer | IELTS | TOEFL iBT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free (cert $8) | $200-$250 | $200-$300 |
| Duration | 25 minutes | 2h 45min | 3 hours |
| Skills tested | Reading, grammar, vocabulary | All 4 skills | All 4 skills |
| Result | Instant | 13 days | 6 days |
| Accepted for visa/university | Rarely | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | Job applications, self-assessment | Formal requirements | Formal requirements |
For formal requirements, university admission, immigration, or regulated professions. IELTS or TOEFL are the standard. For job applications where a certificate is helpful but not formally required, an online CEFR certificate is sufficient and considerably cheaper.
How to prepare
The test covers all levels, so preparation depends on where you expect to land. If you are aiming for B2 or above, the most effective preparation is reading authentic English texts daily, news articles, reports, or anything written for a native audience. This builds vocabulary and grammar intuition faster than grammar drills.
Taking a practice test before the real one helps you understand the question format and manage your time. The Examinizer test has no time limit per question, so you can think through each answer carefully.
