A free Spanish proficiency test gives you your CEFR level in 25 minutes. The result is useful before applying for a job in Spain, preparing for DELE, or checking whether your Spanish is strong enough for a visa application.
What the test covers
A CEFR-based Spanish test covers grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Grammar questions test verb conjugation, gender agreement, and subjunctive use. Vocabulary questions test word meaning in context. Reading questions check whether you extract meaning from a Spanish text correctly.
The test does not measure speaking, writing, or listening. For DELE preparation, you will need a full four-skills assessment as well.
DELE, the official Spanish certificate
DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) is issued by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. It covers all six CEFR levels from A1 to C2. Unlike DELF (French), DELE certificates do not expire.
SIELE is an alternative certification developed by Instituto Cervantes, UNAM, and several Latin American universities. It is accepted for university admission and employment across much of the Spanish-speaking world and may be more relevant if you are targeting a Latin American market specifically.
Spanish levels for common situations
| Situation | Required level | Accepted certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Spanish citizenship (most nationalities) | A2–B1 | DELE A2 or B1 |
| University in Spain (Spanish-taught) | B2 | DELE B2, SIELE |
| Office job in Spain | B2 | DELE or online CEFR cert |
| Client-facing role in Spain | C1 | DELE C1 or online CEFR cert |
| Job in Latin America | B2–C1 | DELE or SIELE |
How long it takes to learn Spanish
Spanish is a Category I language for English speakers according to the US Foreign Service Institute, the easiest category, alongside French, Italian, and Portuguese. Reaching B2 from zero takes approximately 500 to 600 hours of study. Reaching B1 takes roughly 400 hours.
Spanish grammar is more regular than French or German. The subjunctive and the distinction between ser and estar are the two areas that take the most time to internalise. Learners who already know Italian or Portuguese typically reach Spanish proficiency in significantly less time.
Spain vs Latin America
CEFR levels apply equally to Castilian Spanish and Latin American varieties. DELE is based on Castilian Spanish but accepted worldwide. If you are targeting a Latin American employer or university specifically, check whether they accept SIELE, it was developed with Latin American institutions and may carry more weight in those markets.
For job applications and self-assessment, the regional variety does not affect which certificate to use. The CEFR level is what the employer or institution looks at.
