Free French proficiency test online — DELF levels explained

A free French proficiency test tells you your CEFR level in 25 minutes. Whether you are preparing for DELF, applying for a French visa, looking for work in a French-speaking country, or just curious about where you stand, the test result tells you exactly which level you are at and what comes next.

What a French proficiency test covers

A CEFR-based French test covers grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Grammar questions test verb tenses, agreement rules, and sentence structure. Vocabulary questions test word meaning and usage. Reading questions test whether you understand a French text at your level.

The test does not measure speaking, writing, or listening. For a complete picture of your French, particularly speaking and listening, you need a full assessment like DELF.

DELF and DALF, the official French certificates

DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) covers the first four CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, and B2. It is issued by the French Ministry of Education and is recognised worldwide. Each DELF diploma corresponds to one CEFR level and does not expire.

DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française) covers C1 and C2. It is required for university admission in France and is accepted by institutions across the French-speaking world.

TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is an alternative to DELF used for immigration and university admission. Unlike DELF, TCF scores expire after two years.

How long does it take to learn French

French is classified as a Category I language for English speakers, one of the easier languages to reach proficiency in. The US Foreign Service Institute estimates 600 to 750 hours to reach professional working proficiency (approximately B2). Reaching B1 takes roughly 400 to 500 hours.

French shares significant vocabulary with English through Norman French influence. Learners who read regularly in French typically progress faster than those who focus primarily on grammar study.

When an online certificate is enough

For job applications where no specific test is named, an online CEFR certificate from Examinizer gives you a verifiable level at $8. It is sufficient for most employers in France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada who ask for proof of French proficiency without specifying DELF.
