Young Learner English certificate: what it is and who needs one

Pham Minh Anh · July 2026

A Young Learner English certificate records a child's English language ability, usually expressed as a CEFR level from Pre-A1 to B1. It includes the child's name, the level achieved, a score, and the date of the test. Some versions carry a verification code. The certificate is aimed at children roughly between the ages of 5 and 12.

Who issues Young Learner certificates?

Two bodies issue the most widely recognised qualifications: Cambridge English and Trinity College London. Cambridge offers the Young Learners English (YLE) series, split into Starters, Movers, and Flyers, covering roughly Pre-A1 to A2. Trinity offers GESE grades for a similar age range. Both require children to sit in an approved test centre on a fixed date, and both test reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Prices vary by country but typically run from €80 to €150 per sitting. Results can take several weeks.

Online platforms like Examinizer sit in a different category. They are not accredited by any government body or language authority. What they offer is a fast, low-cost snapshot of a child's reading and vocabulary level, captured in a short adaptive quiz taken at home. The certificate is useful for informal purposes: tracking progress or sharing with a tutor. It is not a replacement for Cambridge YLE or Trinity GESE where an official qualification is required.

What the certificate actually shows

A Young Learner English certificate shows the CEFR level your child reached on the day of the test, a numerical score, and the date. Examinizer certificates also include a verification code, so a tutor or language school can confirm the result is genuine.

What an online certificate does not show is equally worth understanding. The test is a reading and vocabulary quiz, so it gives no information about speaking fluency, writing accuracy, or listening comprehension. A child who reads well above their age might score at B1 on vocabulary but still struggle in spoken conversation. The certificate is a useful data point, not a complete picture of language ability.

Who actually needs one

Parents who home-educate want a structured record of progress that sits alongside other learning documentation. Tutors use a baseline result to plan lessons and show clients measurable improvement over time. Children applying informally to bilingual enrichment programmes or summer language camps sometimes need something on paper to indicate their level before an interview.

Families applying for school places in state systems, visa applications, or university preparation cannot use an informal online certificate. For those purposes, Cambridge YLE, Trinity GESE, or later IELTS and DELF qualifications are the appropriate route.

FAQ

No official expiry date is printed on the certificate, but any language result reflects ability at a specific moment. Most tutors and language schools treat a result as current for roughly one to two years. After that, a fresh test gives a more accurate picture of where your child stands.

Yes. The PDF format makes it straightforward to print and add to a paper portfolio or attach to a digital learning record. Note in the portfolio that it is an informal online assessment rather than an accredited qualification, so there is no confusion if a teacher reviews it.

That depends on what you need it for. If you want a printable record of your child's reading and vocabulary level to share with a tutor or keep in a home-education file, €8 is a reasonable cost. If you need proof of level for school admission or an official programme, you need an accredited exam.

The Examinizer kids test covers Pre-A1 through to B1, which matches the range tested in Cambridge YLE Starters, Movers, and Flyers. The result maps your child's score to the closest CEFR band and displays that level on the certificate.
